Mailing Services and dealing with USPS
Mailing Services
When it comes to looking for different forms of mailing services, things can quickly start to get over your head. USPS has tons of regulations and sometimes they are strictly up to whomever is in charge of that post office at that time when you come in. One story that really sticks with me about mailing is a few years ago we had to send out a bubble mailer to about 10,000 people. So we took our sample piece down to the post office and showed them what we were working with and if it would work. The guy behind the counter looked it over, and agreed that it would work fine in their processing machine.Big Mistake
Well our mistake was after having all these things stuffed and labeled we went back and and talked to a different person and they rejected it right away. Now to get a better idea of what we were shipping they were cell phone waterproof cases with a string and look like the piece below. It would seem that the little ball used to draw the string wouldnt go through their machine. They allow for up to 1/4 of an inch when it comes to processing, well it seems that the drop off was just a bit to large for their machine to handle. So now we are sitting with bags of sealed mailers ready to go and no way to send them unless them process them all by hand, which would take far more time and cost way over budget for the client.
The Solution
The solution was that we had to go and take all of these pieces out, and insert a Styrofoam cutout that the ball would slip into. Once the process got underway I was quite surprised at how quickly the transfer to new packaging took. We ended up making our delivery dealline and the client and we were both happy with the results. So when it comes to dealing with USPS, make sure to check with everyone who will be handing your piece ahead of time, or just send it to us to deal with.
